background

The Walser village of St. Antönien is located in the St. Antönier Valley, the typical Walser scattered settlement consists of various groups of buildings in the main valley and various side valleys. The largest settlement and the village church can be found in the center of 1 St. Antönien. The settlement is in the Partnuntal 2 Partnership, some homesteads in the 3 Gafiertal and the scattered settlement of 4 Asharina in the Alpbach valley.

The St. Antöniertal lies south of the main ridge of the Rätikon, behind the chains of the Schesaplana, the Kirchlispitzen, the Drusenfluh, the Sulzfluh and the Schijenfluh is what belongs to the Austrian national territory Montafon, there are various crossings that can be crossed on foot.

Before 1300 the valley was probably largely uninhabited, then it came under the rule of the Lords of Vaz and later the Counts of Toggenburg. At the invitation of the feudal lords, the Walsers immigrated in the 14th century and founded settlements in Ascharina and the Gafiertal. The parish church was built in 1370, first of all a building site had to be cleared, due to the existence of forest avalanches were still unknown. In 1799, as part of the French Wars, Austrian troops marched over the passes through the St. Antönier Valley into the Prättigau. In order to prevent further attempts to circumvent the area, the St. Antönien barrier was set up during World War II. In the avalanche winter of 1951, 42 buildings were destroyed and the first large-scale avalanche barriers in Switzerland were built in St. Antönien.

Between 1979 and 2007, a number of sub-municipalities, St. Antönien - Castels, Rüti and Ascharina, merged and in 2016 the merged municipality of Luzein from St. Antönien, Pany and the Prättigau valley municipality of Luzein.
