L'Europe it has been dug deeper by archaeologists than on any other continent. L'southern Europe has the greatest number of archaeological sites thanks to the presence of Ancient Greece, ofRoman Empire and other ancient civilizations. L'central Europe it is full of medieval castles and early modern palaces, with characteristic features historical centres. However, the European heritage was marked by the war, in particular by the Second World War. It has left many bombed cities unrecognizable and many urban planners have had the opportunity to replace the "old style" of historic centers with (according to current taste) bland 1950s architecture, large streets and overpasses. Though the worst excesses were rejected, many historic buildings that survived the wars were torn down in this somewhat iconoclastic frenzy.
