free. The Ponte di S. Francesco is located at the entrance of Subiaco along the Via Sublacense, coming from Rome it is clearly visible on the right. The medieval bridge was built over the River Aniene after Subiaco's war victory against the army of the city of Tivoli, won by the abbot Ademaro in the year 1358. It is a single-span bridge and "Donkey back" type. Towering over the span is a tower that controlled its passage and traffic. The entire artifact is built in blocks of local limestone, spongy and porous limestone called goldfinch and quarried in Subiaco at the current Ponte S. Mauro. Panoramic point of exceptional aesthetic value, the bridge was depicted in countless paintings by artists of the Grand Tour who went to the Benedictine monasteries of Subiaco attracted by the possibility of study offered by the stupendous medieval frescoes and the library of S. Scolastica.
