Swansea [ˈSwɒnzɪ] (Welsh Abertawe) is a town in Wales, Great Britain.
background
The famous saying by Dylan Thomas that Swansea is an “ugly, lovely town” has become a catchphrase and unofficial motto of Swansea, as has “Dirty Old Town” for Salford has been. Swansea's sister cities are Mannheim in Germany (since 1959), Pau in France and Cork in Ireland. The Welsh name of the city means the mouth ("but") of the river "Tawe". The name Swansea is traced back to the Old Norse "Sveinns ey", meaning Svens Eiland.
getting there
By plane
Internationally, Cardiff and possibly Bristol airports can be reached. Of Cardiff it takes a good hour to get to Swansea by train Bristol it's about two hours. There is a small selection of low-cost airlines at both airports.
There are flights to Cardiff Airport from Germany on individual days of the week from Munich and Düsseldorf.
Another alternative is to travel via London. Geographically is Heathrow most conveniently located, the one well covered by low-cost airlines Standsted Airport is about an hour further from Swansea. In any case, you have to drive effectively to central London in order to drive from Paddington Station to Swansea in about 3.5 hours.
If necessary, airports in Central England could still be an alternative in exceptional cases.
By train
Swansea itself has a train station and is well connected to the English rail system. You can reach z. B. Cardiff in one hour, Bristol in 1.5 hours and London in 3.5 hours. Swansea and Wales can be reached from the continent via the Eurotunnel (reservation necessary, comparatively expensive).
By bus
In Great Britain, coaches are quite common as a means of transport, slightly slower than trains and slightly cheaper. Swansea can be reached from all major cities partly with transfer connections (approx. 4.5 hours from London).
In the street
Swansea is easily accessible from the M4 motorway, which connects London to Wales. Travel time from London is approximately 3 hours.
By boat
There are ferry connections from Ireland.
