background
In the Middle Ages Syros came under the control of the Venetians, under whose rule the Catholic faith spread on the island. When the Turks conquered the Cyclades in 1537, Syros was considered to be Pope's island. Therefore, the French, allied with the Turks, were given patronage. Even today, the majority of the island's inhabitants are Catholic. In 1834 Ermoupoli became the capital of the Cyclades, as a result a shipping company and some industry settled there.
In contrast to most of the other Cyclades islands, tourism is not the top priority. First and foremost there is shipbuilding, agriculture with the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, there is also some textile manufacture. Syros is also known for making sweets.
