Mykonos City: Little Venice

There are basically only two larger towns on the island, the town of Mykonos and the village of Ano Mera. All the others are smaller scattered settlements, they have fewer than 200 inhabitants outside the holiday season.

  • 1  Mykonos town (Μύκονος (πόλη), Chora). Mykonos City in the Wikipedia encyclopediaMykonos City (Q12286651) in the Wikidata database. Also known under the name Hora, about 6,500 inhabitants. Its winding streets are car-free with a few exceptions, there are parking spaces in the south by the windmill hill Kato Mili and in the northwest at the marina. Nevertheless, pedestrians have to be careful: mopeds are allowed to drive. The old town and port are located in a bay that opens to the north. On the west side is the striking structure of the Paraportiani Church. This is followed by the Little Venice district, behind it is the Kato Myli hill, on top of which there is a row of windmills, they are the symbol of the city. On the east side of the harbor basin is a large square with the monument to the freedom fighter Manto Mavrogenous, here is a taxi stand.
Little Venice: The name of the district goes back to the rule of the Venetians, who built a fortification at the port entrance. Of this Kastro you can still find a few foundations in the area of the Paraportiani-Church. This winding structure actually consists of a total of 5 chapels. Directly behind it, the small, nested alleys begin, in which you can get lost. Their architectural style and color scheme are Venetian, their facades have balconies and, in addition to blinding white, are in blue, yellow or pink. As in Venice, provisions had been made in the event of a flood: there were connections from house to house across the narrow streets. However, there is not much left of it.
Pelican Petros: The old town around Little Venice has been ruling since the 1950s Petros. After a storm in the 1950s, a fisherman nursed an injured pelican back to life. The animal became hand-tame and a tourist attraction. After more than 30 years he died Pelican Petros, then a successor (number ??) was settled. Meanwhile, Petros became a partner named Irina assigned, recognizable by a ring on the leg. Both are aware of their dignity. They reside on the west side of the harbor, are somewhere between Paraportiani church, old town and town hall, often accompanied by a crowd of tourists on their hikes. Most of them are good-natured, but they have caused damage to property from digital cameras on their conscience. Their wings are clipped, they cannot fly away.

Kato Myli: The lower windmill hill adjoins Little Venice to the southwest, on top of which there are 5 windmills in a row. None of them are functional, some of them are privately owned and inhabited.
Ano Myli: From the harbor you can see a hill with a windmill on the east side Bonis Windmill. It stands on a beautifully landscaped square that is called Agricultural Museum serves. The museum is open in summer with free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a popular place at sunset. You have an even better view from a place on the road above to Ano Mera.

Ano Mera in the encyclopedia WikipediaAno Mera (Q12272087) in the Wikidata database.Former capital of the island in the interior, relatively little tourism, remained quite original. The village is 10 km from Mykonos town and has about 1,300 inhabitants. The town center consists of a platia, surrounded by a few taverns, a supermarket and the monastery Panagia Tourliani. There are a number of hamlets and farms scattered around the town center.
Panagia Tourliani: The monastery was founded in 1542 and expanded in 1767. Opening times daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. There is a beautiful marble fountain in the cloister courtyard. background

It is famous as a cosmopolitan travel destination among the Greek islands and also known as one of the great tourist meccas. In addition to Santorini, Mykonos has the largest number of hotels and guest houses, and in summer cruise ships are anchored every day, whose visitors mingle with the tourists who throng the narrow streets of the old town, marvel at the displays of overpriced shops or just simply enjoy the picturesque scenery. The audience changes late in the evening. Mostly young guests, among them party animals and self-promoters, turn night into day in clubs, bars and discos or celebrate on the famous beaches.

Mykonos is an excellent example of the unique Cycladic architecture that has emerged in the picturesque fishing villages. Completely whitewashed, cube-shaped buildings form seemingly haphazard mazes of paths and streets. Many well-preserved windmills and hundreds of tiny chapels with red roofs complete the scenery. Though essentially less picturesque than Santorini visitors feel like they are in a Greek version of Disneyland. Large parts of the landscape have been pimped up in order to pretend to the tourist crowds that it is as authentic as possible.

getting there

Panagia Paraportiani

By plane

Mykonos owns with the 1 Mykonos airportWebsite of this institutionMykonos Airport in the Wikipedia encyclopediaMykonos Airport in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryMykonos Airport (Q1432110) in the Wikidata database(IATA: JMK) about 4 km from the main town via its own airport. Olympic Airways and Aegean Airlines fly this airport from Athens and Thessaloniki off regularly. The only way to get from the airport itself is by taxi. In summer, during the high season, charter airlines also fly to the island from many European cities, often with stopovers in Athens or even on Crete. The flight from Athens to Mykonos takes about 30 minutes, from Crete to Mykonos you can expect just under an hour.

By boat

Ferries and High speed catamaran boats run daily from Piraeus and Paros out. Flying Dolphins offers a 3-1 / 2-hour trip for around € 50 each way. From Santorini the island can be reached daily with the Flying cats can be achieved. There are also ferry connections to Rafina. The high-speed catamarans still call at the old port near Chora, the car ferries use the new port near Tourlos, as do the cruise ships. Most of the time, however, they anchor outside the port, and passengers then have to use a tender boat to go ashore.

mobility

You can use a scooter, quad, car or bus. The bus network is quite clear: all lines start and end at a bus station in Chora. The small bus station "Fabrika" is located near the windmills on the southern outskirts, from here buses go to the southeastern towns. The second bus station is in the northeast of Hora near the marina, from here buses go in a northerly direction, e.g. to the new port.

Taxis run in a roughly constant number during the day, which is why it is almost impossible to find a taxi in the evening - you sometimes have to wait hours in the city. There is a taxi rank next to the "Fabrika" bus station, the more important one is on the east side of the old port.

There are two ferry ports in Mykonos-Hora, the main town on the island. If you are on foot and want to leave the island, you should make sure that the ferry leaves from the old port in the city or from the new port 10 km north.

Boats to / from Delos dock on the west side of the port, tickets are available there at a clearly labeled kiosk.

Tourist Attractions

Map of Mykonos
  • 1  Ghizi castle ruins. The main castle was on the hill, while there are medieval ruins around it, including a small complex of buildings that is in relatively better condition, near the road that leads to the northern part of the island. After the fall of Constantinople in 1204, the islands of Tinos and Mykonos were given to brothers Andrea and Ieremiah Ghizi from Venice. The Ghizi family ruled Mykonos until 1390. Then the island officially came under Ottoman rule, which was ruled by a committee of Christians. The hill was fortified early in the Venetian period. The castle was abandoned in the Ottoman period. From the 14th to the 19th centuries, the island was practically occupied by pirates of various nationalities who used Mykonos as a base to raid the rest of the Aegean.
