Szentgotthárd [sentgothArd] (Slovenian: Monster, German: St. Gotthard) is a small border town in the east Hungary in the vicinity of Austria.

Szentgotthárd is located on a plain along the river Rába. Körmend found 16, Szombathely 41, Graz 65, Vienna 140, Budapest 218 kilometers.

History

The place was initially an abbey, later also a village. In 1664 a major battle took place, military leader Raimondo Montecuccoli along with Austrians and French defeated the Turks. The battlefield now belongs to Austria. At the end of the 19th century the completed railway between Budapest and Graz affected the community. In 1920 Szentgotthárd became a border crossing to Austria by road and rail. During socialism the infamous Iron Curtain stretched close. Szentgotthárd was in practice a closed place and slept. In 1983 Szentgotthárd became a town. In 1989 the iron curtain was removed, the town woke up. The industry produces car parts. Since 2008, due to the Schengen Treaty, the borders have been easily crossed.

Szentgotthárd is found in a temperate, continental climate, as is Hungary, but as in the western part, it rains more often.
