History

The first mention comes in Wárad form in 1332 in an ecclesiastical list. The village belonged sometimes to the king, sometimes to several magnates. Especially in the 18th century, pottery, brick, glass and iron production began to operate, and in 1908 a quarry, a small-gauge railway and a lime kiln were in operation. In 1948 they became nationalized and ceased to function. However, a famous horse farm has been in operation since 1952, after which the village hosts various horse competitions and attracts tourists who are interested in horse sports. In the 1970s the former narrow gauge railway was transformed into a tourist railway.

Szilvásvárad is located in a temperate, continental climate, like full Hungary, but the temperature is slightly colder due to the northern mountainous area.
