Sao Nicolau with an area of 388 km² is one of the smaller islands of the Cape Verde Islands. It lies in the north of the archipelago between Sao Vicente and Sal and belongs to the Ilhas de Barlavento (Islands above the wind). The highest point is Monte Gordo (1312 m) in the west.
Regions
The west of the rather mountainous island with the volcanic cone of Monte Gordo has an approximately wedge-shaped shape, the tip of which points south. The east is a relatively narrow peninsula running from east to west.

Occupied for the Portuguese crown on December 6, 1460 (hence the name), São Nicolau has natural watercourses and is therefore quite green with lush valleys between jagged rocks. The island was not permanently settled until the 18th century and was of greater importance because of its seminary opened in 1866 and the attached secular school.

The transport links (plane or ferry) were described as "not quite as good". Small airport in Preguiça at Ribeira Brava, Ferry terminal in Tarrafal. The ferry has been operating since 2014 Liberdadi of Mindelo to São Nicolau.
