Safety
As of April 2011, Tamaulipas has become very dangerous even for Mexicans themselves. The big problem now is the cartel war (CDG, Z) which is terrorizing all the inhabitants of Tamaulipas. Even crossing from north to south alone has become very dangerous.
The San Fernando area (about 100km from the north) is a dangerous place. An illegal cemetery was discovered in this region where they found more than 100 bodies, some of which were cruelly slaughtered by the cartel. So it is not advisable to visit Tamaulipas now, otherwise in case of need, take all necessary measures to avoid attracting the attention of criminals (no bright clothes, with little money, etc.).
