Tanah Rata is the largest and most famous settlement in the Cameron Highlands. The main town offers visitors to the Cameron Highlands a wide range of accommodation, restaurants and also quiet places such as parks as well as a whole range of hiking opportunities in the area.

Buses leave the bus station in Jalan Raja every hour Tapah in the Cameron Highlands to Tanah Rata. The fare is around RM 5.00. The bus station in Tanah Rate is in the middle of Jalan Besar.

Those who want to explore the city and its surroundings can easily do so on foot. For some of the area attractions one should go for one taxi use. To the north of the main street Jalan Besar there is a central taxi rank. Fares are a little higher than in the rest of Malaysia. There is now a fixed rate of RM 50.00 for a 2-hour journey. Fields in the Cameron Hoghlands

Hike: The town is the starting point for a number of official hiking routes through the mountains of the Highlands. However, the paths are not always particularly well marked in the locality. Information and maps can be bought on site. It is more helpful than maps on paper, which are often of poor quality, to load offline maps onto a GPS-enabled smartphone.

Since 2014, travelers have reported regularly from armed robbery on trail number 9 from Tanah Rata to the Robinson Power Plant. There is an urgent warning against a man with a long knife who threatens single travelers and women in particular and demands money. There is also talk of targeted attacks by vicious dogs.

  • The Robinson Waterfall is not too far from Tanah Rata and within walking distance. Follow the road to the hospital and take the path on the right where the river and the road meet. The water is not particularly suitable for swimming.
