background

Coat of arms of fir

Harzer Rotes Höhenvieh and dark spruce forests are landmarks of the traditional Tanne resort.

The development from a smelting and mining location to a health resort and recreation area spanned a period of over 660 years. The place owes its origin to the former Tanner Hut, an ironworks and iron foundry that was located here from 1355 to 1965.

From the end of the 19th century, the place was increasingly discovered by summer visitors and those seeking relaxation. After the First World War, Tanne developed into a much-visited climatic health resort and has been one since 2000 state-approved resort.

The Breeding of the Harzer Rotes Höhenviehs, a breed of cattle that is now threatened with extinction, has always played an important role in Tanne. In 1995 the herdbook was officially resumed. In the meantime, over 500 animals of this breed specially bred for the Harz are grazing on the mountain meadows in the region.
