East Harz - Ostharz

The Eastern Harz, today often equated with Lower resin, is the one in the new federal states, essentially in Saxony-Anhalt located part of the Resin. Just a small part around Nordhausen/ Ilfeld belongs to Thuringia. The Eastern Harz borders on the north and north-east Magdeburg Börde, to the east and south-east to that Mansfeld country, in the southwest to the in Northern Thuringia located landscapes of the Golden Aue and Kyffhauser/Hainleite. In the west the in Lower Saxony located part of the Harz Mountains (Upper Harz; the designation West Harz is ambiguous).

Administratively, the Saxony-Anhalt part of the Harz Mountains largely coincides with the Harz district with administrative headquarters in Halberstadt.

  • 1 Halberstadt - Located a little away from the Harz, the old episcopal town is the district town of the Harz district and is called "Gateway to the Harz"

By train

The long-distance trains of the DB make a wide berth around the eastern Harz. The next IC or ICE stops are in Magdeburg, Halle (Saale), Hanover and Göttingen. There you have to change to local trains, which in this region are mostly from private ones Abellio Rail Central Germany operate. Nevertheless, the normal DB tickets are also valid. Important lines in the region are the RE 11 Magdeburg – Halberstadt – Quedlinburg – Thale (every hour) and the RE 4/24 Halle – Halberstadt (–Wernigerode – Goslar) (every hour). You can change between the two lines at the Halberstadt railway junction. From Magdeburg to Quedlinburg you drive z. B. around 1:15 hours, from Halle to Wernigerode 1½ hours, from Hanover or Göttingen to Wernigerode (with another change in Goslar) 1:50 hours.

Only on weekends there are three direct train connections to / from Berlin with the Harz-Berlin-Express (HBX). This runs on Friday evenings, Saturday evenings and Sunday evenings from the Harz (Thale, Quedlinburg; Goslar, Ilsenburg, Wernigerode - train unification or division in Halberstadt) to Berlin and on Saturday mornings, Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings from Berlin to the Harz Mountains. The journey from Berlin to Wernigerode or Quedlinburg takes around three hours each. Outside of Saxony-Anhalt, there are no network and DB tickets in the HBX. The one-way trip to or from Berlin costs 16 €, the tickets are available from the train staff.

  • Bodetal - is above Thale, with the famous granite rocks Hexentanzplatz and Rosstrappe.
  • Great Auerberg (579 m) with observation tower Joseph Cross at Stolberg
  • Rappbodetalsperre - largest dam in the Harz Mountains. The reservoir is used as a drinking water reservoir. Water sports and swimming are therefore not permitted. The 106 m high dam is worth a detour. The barrier can be driven on with motor vehicles.
  • Show caves Baumanns- and Herrmannshöhle as Büchenberg show mine in the cave location Rübeland.
  • Karst cave "Heimkehle" on the southern edge of the Eastern Harz Mountains south of Stolberg (additional)

  • Kyffhauser - Small low mountain range, which can be found about 10 km south of the Eastern Harz. The famous Barbarossa monument is enthroned here in the summit region. The Barbarossa Cave is also located on the western edge. The small but diverse low mountain range invites you to go hiking.
