Tarancon is a city located in the region of La Mancha Alta, in the west of the Cuenca province. It has about 15,000 inhabitants and is 818 meters above sea level.

Curiosities

Located on the route from Madrid to the Levantine coast, Tarancón has depended over time on various jurisdictions, forming part of that of Uclés and later of the province of Toledo. Only in 1833 did it become part of Cuenca.

By car

Tarancón is an important road junction, located at the junction of the A-3 with the A-40. It is slightly closer to Madrid (82 km) than to Cuenca (84 km), and its condition as a crossroads makes it very accessible from Toledo, Valencia and other places.

By bus

By bus, it has lines to Basin, Madrid Y Valencia.

Despite being located in Castilla-la Mancha, Tarancón is part of the E2 zone of the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium.

By train

There is a station served by the line from Madrid to Valencia by Cuenca by traditional railway, not AVE.

Tarancón has a great historical and monumental interest. Its traditional urban center is divided into three squares and a set of narrow streets that house beautiful buildings.

  • Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. Asset of Cultural Interest. The temple is of Gothic origin, and is located within an atrium that is accessed through the Arco de la Malena. Its great tower is known as the "Giralda Manchega" composed of five square and two octagonal bodies that house the clock and the wrought-iron cross (18th century), the work of Luis de Arteaga. Inside the temple, the imposing Plateresque main altarpiece, the work of Pedro de Villadiego, stands out.
  • Palace of the Dukes of Riánsares. It is currently the town hall of the municipality. It is the work of the architect Narciso Pascual, author of the building of the Spanish Congress of Deputies.

  • Palace-house of the Paradas. Built in the seventeenth century, it is currently home to the museum of contemporary art and historical archive.
  • Sanctuary of the Virgin of Riánsares. According to tradition, the image was brought to Tarancón by Recaredo. The sanctuary is located 5 km from Tarancón. The original hermitage is from the 17th century, although it has been greatly modified. In the 19th century, a palace was added, which was badly damaged by air raids in the Civil War and later rebuilt. The Roman bridge, part of the road that linked Segóbriga with Complutum, is still in use.
