Tarxien is a community in Southern Harbor District on Malta.

The community Ħal Tarxien directly adjoins the one in the west Paola, the transition is hardly noticeable in the streets. The local parish church was consecrated as early as 1592, and Tarxien is one of the oldest parishes in Malta.

getting there

By plane

The 1 Malta International Airport located in Luqa about three and a half kilometers outside of town.

By bus

The bus routes X2 and X3 operate as express lines from the airport to Valetta above Paola.

The bus stop Neolitici is from the lines 81 and 82 of Valletta in the southeast towards Birzebbuga resp. Arrived at Marsaxlokk on the east coast, at the bus stop Paola can be boarded from the express lines.

In the street

From the main street 1 you switch to the Vjal Santa Lucija and the main street 9which passes in the south of the village.

Locally you move on foot, the temple complexes are to the north of the bus stop Neolitici of the lines 81 and 82 and are easily accessible on foot.

  • the neolithic 1 Tarxien temples : after plowing work was repeatedly hindered by large stones, the cause was investigated and the director of the National Archaeological Museum Sir Themistocles Zammit was appointed - based on the experience gained thanks to the discovery of the nearby hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni. He discovered the first semicircular temple complexes and carried out extensive systematic burial work from 1915 to 1920 with the help of local residents. The temple complexes from the Neolithic were with Triliths - gates (a third stone is placed over two upright stones as a lintel), Sacrificial altars and a brazier and larger than life Sculptures of female figures found, they are associated with a Magna Mater cult. The Neolithic finds date from the period 3,250 - 2,500 BC, the younger Bronze Age layer with finds of cremations and grave goods from a probable necropolis from the period 2,400 - 1,500 BC. in the same area was removed, the finds are in the National Museum.
From the entrance area you get to the South Temple / Temple V with anteroom, temple room (with altars with spiral motifs) and the lower abdomen of a female colossal status in the right apse and the sanctuary with carefully worked altar stone, this most richly decorated temple is dated around 3,100 BC. dated.
The Central Temple / Temple VI from the epoch around 3,000 BC. has an unusual three-part structure of anteroom, temple area and sanctuary, each with two apses. In the anteroom there is a stone fire bowl, the altar stones are in turn decorated with spiral motifs. In the next room there is a stone slab with animal motifs, goats and a pig.
The stone slabs of the side walls of the East Temple / Temple IV from about 3,150 BC. are only partially preserved, but the architecture with the vestibule and temple area is clearly recognizable. An oracle niche with an oracle hole, from which the priest received divine inspirations, can be seen in the temple area.
Further to the east there are foundations of the older temples I - III from the period around 3,250, the excavations of which had to be postponed due to unclear ownership relationships with the residents.
