The ruins fell into disrepair, and in medieval times there was a field camp for the troops of Emperor Otto II here near Metapont, who led a campaign against the Saracens here in 982. The ruins were later interpreted as the knights' banquet hall, which is a peculiar name "Tavole Palatine" ("Tafeln der Ritter") or Latin "Mensae imperatoris" (Emperor's banquet tables).
Excavations were carried out at the temple in 1926 and the ruins were restored in 1961.
Sightseeing
The Greek 1 Temple of Hera Measured 34.6 x 13.66 m, there were 12 columns on the long sides and six columns with Doric capitals at the front, 15 of which have been partially preserved. The temple with a central naos had a roof made of colored tiles; Remnants of it and gargoyle-like figures are exhibited in the archaeological museum.
