Understand
The Tavush region, located in the north of Armenia, is made up of rocky hills, peaks, and dense forests which give it a very characteristic style. More than 120 species of trees adorn the landscape. The region is also full of rivers, lakes, mineral and natural springs. It also offers its visitors several seaside resorts, hotels and fitness centers. Tourists can therefore come here to recharge their batteries and enjoy a pastoral environment.
Cities
The cities of Ijevan and Dilijan, the main industrial centers and tourist sites in the region, are also famous for their cultural heritage.
- 1 Dilijan (Դիլիջան) – - The city was once crossed by the Silk Road and was an important monastic and learning center. Witness the impressive monasteries of Haghartsin and Goshavank.
- 2 Idjevan (Իջևան) – Located in the heart of Tavoush, the city is renowned for the hospitality of its inhabitants which has endured since ancient times. Its name is derived from the word inn or caravanserai and has its origins in the days of the Silk Road, when travelers, merchants and adventurers came to find rest for a stopover. Ijevan was also a center of traditional craftsmanship renowned for its rugs that were found in homes around the world.
Other destinations
- 1 Dilijan National Park – is home to a wide variety of animals and plants, many of which are declared threatened or protected species. There are more than 1,000 species of plants and 107 species of birds.
- 2 Dendro Park (in Idjevan) – this arboretum is dedicated to the preservation of rare trees and is full of a multitude of varieties of flowers. In spring, the walk along the mountain paths offers an endless spectacle of fields of wild flowers and allows you to cool off at one of the many natural springs.
