Geographical notes

The town is located in the north east of the island of Lanzarote, in an area of arid volcanic hills.

When to go

The climate is almost constant throughout the year with an average annual temperature around 20 ° C. Given the hilly position exposed to winds, the maximum temperature never exceeds 30 ° C, while the night temperature in winter can reach 10 ° C with an even lower perceived temperature.

Background

It was the first Spanish colony on Canarian soil, founded in 1402 by Maciot de Bethencourt, nephew and heir of Jean (1360 - 1425), the Norman noble who began the systematic conquest of the archipelago on behalf of King Henry III of Castile. The name Teguise was that of the wife of Maciot, daughter of Guadarfia, the last king of the Guanches (the pre-Hispanic natives of Canary Islands. Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote until 1847.

Events and parties

  • Sunday market (Mercadillo de Teguise). Sunday morning animates the town, the stalls are dismantled at 2 pm The market occupies all the streets of the center, for the most part I know of uninteresting souvenirs but you can find some handicraft stalls. Some street artists also work among the stalls. Arriving in the city by car you will find paid parking (1.80 € for the day), about 400 m from the city center, but it is easy to try to continue, the streets are all closed.
