Tholen [1] is a city on the island Tholen, in the east of the province Zealand. It is located on the west side of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal, which forms the border with the province North Brabant. For historical reasons, Tholen is not called a village but a city: in the 14th century Tholen acquired city rights.

Tourists can visit the historic city center and visit the Oosterschelde and the Zoommeer. The recreation area 'de Speelmansplaten' is located on the Oesterdam, from where, among other things, various water sports can be practiced. Diving is also regularly practiced at the Oesterdam. The Oosterschelde and the Zoommeer are very rich in birdlife.

Also the historic center and the bushy, hilly surroundings of Bergen op Zoom are tourist destinations in the vicinity of Tholen.

  • The Van Dam organ (1832) in the Grote Kerk, which has a tower of almost 50 meters high and is built in Gothic style.
  • Another striking building is the former town hall from the 15th century, which was designed by the famous Keldermans family of architects. The oldest carillon bell in the Netherlands, also from the 15th century, hangs in this town hall.
  • The townscape is further determined by the De Hoop windmill, which was built on one of the ramparts.
