Thorsminde is a fishing village on the west coast of Central Jutland. The small town is in the middle of the spit Bøvling Klit, which separates the Nissum Fjord from the North Sea.

background

There are apparently not many reasons to stop in Thorsminde on a vacation trip through Jutland other than the fact that you have to pass through if you are on a drive up the West Jutland coast. The small town on the Bøvling Klit derives its importance mainly from the fishing port, which is here behind the canal to the North Sea on the Nissum Fjord, safely protected from the floods of the sea by a lock. And yet, as a traveler who is looking for the quiet corners of the country and wants to see more of Denmark but less of other tourists, this place should be carefully examined.

Thorsminde gained historical importance due to the numerous strandings that happened here off the coast. Particularly sensational was the misfortune that happened off the coast of Thorsminde on Christmas Eve 1811: the English warship was stranded during a hurricane just north of the town HMS Defense, a little south of the HMS St. Georgewho were both in a convoy on their way home to the UK. A total of around 1,300 seafarers were killed, only a few were able to save themselves on land. The unusual Strandingsmuseum (Strandungsmuseum) in Thorsminde is dedicated to this disaster and other strandings (until 2017[outdated] under renovation), which in itself is a reason for a stopover - and also the most important tourist attraction of the place.

Otherwise Thorsminde offers the usual coastal program: beach and sea, fish sandwiches at the harbor and, as always, old bunker systems. What is special, however, is the place itself, which up here in its remote location does not seem to try to dress up for the tourists; You won't find any holiday home areas here either, Bøvling Klit is much too narrow for that. It is a typical fishing place and as this has more of the charm of showing Danish life and no summer house hustle and bustle.

The location between the sea and the fjord at just a few hundred meters is also special - at its widest point, at the level of the campsite, the place is just 600 m wide from bank to bank. This enables holidaymakers to make a spontaneous decision several times a day, if necessary, to spend their time by the sea or the fjord. The fjord, which is usually only 50-100 cm deep at this point, is also a well-known area for kite and windsurfers, and every summer the campsite is the location for a summer camp known throughout Europe among kite surfers.

Kite surfing

Thorsminde Rescue Station

Thorsminde actually is the Kitesurfing area in Denmark. Reasons that make this spot a very special one include:

  • The surfing area on the Nissumfjord is unusually large (about 3 x 10 km) and is hardly used by other watercraft - due to the shallow depth (often only 50 cm, even less), the fjord is not very suitable for windsurfers, at least off Thorsminde, who Fin can get stuck in the sand.
  • Due to the continuous headroom, it is a suitable area for beginners, but advanced surfers will also find enough challenges here - professionals can also surf on the North Sea off Thorsminde (but this should really be reserved for professionals).
  • The area can be used in any wind direction, as the offshore wind does not pose a threat here either.

A German kite school has been offering surf camps on the site of the campsite for several years, which are suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers. The facilities of the campsite can be used.

fishing

Thorsminde is also a suitable area for anglers, whether on the lake side at the pier or on the fjord side at the harbor - a rich catch is (almost) a matter of course.

camping

  • 1  Thorsminde Camping, Klitrosevej 4. Tel.: 45 9749 7056, Email: . This campsite is not necessarily a beauty, the long wooden fence walls that subdivide the various parcels look uncomfortable, but campers in particular will appreciate them very much because of the wind protection given the often strong winds that can quickly become stormy. The place is always functional and also suitable for a longer stay: The sanitary facilities are neat and partly new, there are huts of different categories and the surfing beach on the Nissumfjord is one of Denmark's best kitesurfing areas. The place is suitable for bad weather with its mini indoor pool, a large closed lounge and a semi-open, but also wind and weather-protected large kitchen and dining area - thus ideally suited for cyclists on the North Sea Cycle Path, to sit out a bad weather day here, and also to pull the kite surfers out of the surf camp When the weather is wet and cold, like to go back to the roofed room in the evening.Open: around mid-March to mid-October.

Holiday home

There are a few more holiday homes in town that are available through the local holiday home agency ulfborg-feriehus.dk are to be booked.
