Landscapes of exceptional beauty, flora and fauna are:
- 1 Dadia National Park
(Εθνικό Πάρκο Δάσους Δαδιάς-Λευκίμμης-Σουφλίου). Wooded national park, known for birds of prey.
- 2 Evros Delta (Εθνικό Πάρκο Δέλτα Έβρου). Nature reserve with a great variety of birds, especially during bird migration.
- 3 Rhodope Mountains (Ροδόπη). Wild lonely mountain landscape with many places of worship of the ancient Thracians.
- 4 Nestos (Nestos Delta National Park and Vistonida-Ismarida Lakes). River landscape of unique beauty and abundance of birds.
- 5 Thracians meteora. Standing rocks of wild beauty impress the visitor. They are 25 km from Iasmos and can only be reached via hiking trails. The path (Q6) starts on the banks of the Kompsatos river (Trikorfa bridge). The other path starts in the Polyarnou settlement, right next to the mountain hut.
- 6 Symvola waterfalls. small waterfall in a very beautiful stream landscape.
Archaeological sites
In Thrace there are many ancient to Ottoman sights in the lowlands, while there are in the Rhodope Mountains very interesting old Thracian places of worship.
- 3 Chestnut (Αρχαία Μαρώνεια). Interesting archaeological site and geologically impressive rock formations.
- 4 Anastasiopolis (Αναστασιούπολις). The impressive ruins of a Byzantine city, overgrown by vegetation, are a "lost place" that is well worth seeing. The place is not easy to find and leave, which gives it a special charm.
- 6 Mosynopolis (Μαξιμιανούπολις-Μοσυνούπολις). Ruins of a Byzantine city on the Via Egnatia at Komotini.
- 7 Gratinos (Γρατινή Ροδόπης). sparse remains of a formerly important Byzantine settlement in the village of Gratini Komotini.
- 8 Macedonian tomb of Symvolaws. old grave complex that can only be viewed from the outside.
Religious sites
- 1 Porto Lagos monastery (Λάγος Ξάνθης). very interesting monastery complex in a lake. Main attraction in the area.
- 2 Monastery of Ag. Maximou Kausokalyvi. Big, beautiful monastery with a great view. The access is via a dirt road.
- Panagia monastery from Evros

background
The Thrace region came to Greece only in the course of the Balkan Wars (1912-13). In addition to the mostly Orthodox Greeks, Muslim minorities also live in this area. Thrace is still very little developed for tourism, although there are numerous historical sites, beautiful nature and beautiful, uncrowded beaches. The Rhodope Mountains are particularly impressive, both in the Greek and in the Bulgarian part. There are enough transitions between the two countries to explore the mountains on both sides.
language
In addition to Greek, Turkish is very widespread. In all tourist places you can get along very well with English and sometimes also German
getting there
The highway A2 leads from Thessaloniki to the east via Alexandropouli to Turkey. Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupolis are on the Thessaloniki - Istanbul railway line.
mobility
Trains and intercity buses run between the main towns. The most famous beaches of Alexandroupolis can be reached quite easily by bus, as are those of Komotini and Xanthi to some extent. If you want to visit the sights in the mountains or further outside the cities, you should better do it with your own vehicle.
activities
- Beaches: Thrace is known for its beautiful uncrowded beaches. They are especially nice at 1 Mangana, 2 Avdiron scale further east then several bays at 3 Lefkippos and 4 Mandra beach. Of 5 Fanari to 6 Platanitis and from 7 Mesimvria until after 8 Nea chili There is an endless chain of beautiful, uncrowded beaches, only interrupted by the Ismarou mountains at Chestnut. Nudist beaches cannot be found on the mainland during the season, also because of the high proportion of Muslim residents and holidaymakers. Only on Samothrace there are nudist beaches.
- hike: In the Rhodope Mountains Mountains and Dadia National Park there are endless, but mostly lonely, hiking trails in a spectacular landscape
kitchen
Delicious dishes typical of Greece can be found along the beaches. Because of the high proportion of Muslim population, pork dishes are outnumbered or even no longer on the menu when you go to the mountain villages. In the cities there is a wide selection from fast food to specialties.
nightlife
The nightlife is concentrated in the 3 major cities. On the beaches it takes place in restaurants, bars and beach bars
security
Crime is almost non-existent. In the Rhodope Mountains the danger comes from nature itself and the loneliness of the landscape. Anyone who is out and about here should always inform someone about the route and destination.
climate
The best travel time is June to the end of September
