background

The Thrace region came to Greece only in the course of the Balkan Wars (1912-13). In addition to the mostly Orthodox Greeks, Muslim minorities also live in this area. Thrace is still very little developed for tourism, although there are numerous historical sites, beautiful nature and beautiful, uncrowded beaches. The Rhodope Mountains are particularly impressive, both in the Greek and in the Bulgarian part. There are enough transitions between the two countries to explore the mountains on both sides.

language

In addition to Greek, Turkish is very widespread. In all tourist places you can get along very well with English and sometimes also German

getting there

The highway A2 leads from Thessaloniki to the east via Alexandropouli to Turkey. Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupolis are on the Thessaloniki - Istanbul railway line.

mobility

Trains and intercity buses run between the main towns. The most famous beaches of Alexandroupolis can be reached quite easily by bus, as are those of Komotini and Xanthi to some extent. If you want to visit the sights in the mountains or further outside the cities, you should better do it with your own vehicle.

activities

  • Beaches: Thrace is known for its beautiful uncrowded beaches. They are especially nice at 1 Mangana, 2 Avdiron scale further east then several bays at 3 Lefkippos and 4 Mandra beach. Of 5 Fanari to 6 Platanitis and from 7 Mesimvria until after 8 Nea chili There is an endless chain of beautiful, uncrowded beaches, only interrupted by the Ismarou mountains at Chestnut. Nudist beaches cannot be found on the mainland during the season, also because of the high proportion of Muslim residents and holidaymakers. Only on Samothrace there are nudist beaches.

kitchen

Delicious dishes typical of Greece can be found along the beaches. Because of the high proportion of Muslim population, pork dishes are outnumbered or even no longer on the menu when you go to the mountain villages. In the cities there is a wide selection from fast food to specialties.

nightlife

The nightlife is concentrated in the 3 major cities. On the beaches it takes place in restaurants, bars and beach bars

security

Crime is almost non-existent. In the Rhodope Mountains the danger comes from nature itself and the loneliness of the landscape. Anyone who is out and about here should always inform someone about the route and destination.

climate

The best travel time is June to the end of September
