background

Thun is a medium-sized city, the third largest in the canton of Bern. It is located at the northern end of Lake Thun at the outflow of the Aare. Thun is often used as a gateway to Bernese Oberland designated. The old town in the upper and lower Hauptgasse and on the Schlossberg is well preserved, while most of the old houses in Bälliz have given way to modern buildings in the course of the 20th century.

The present urban area was already settled in the Neolithic Age. The keep of the castle, which still exists today, and the upper main street were built around 1190. At that time the city belonged to the dukes of Zähringen, in 1218 the counts of Kyburg inherited the city.

Thun became an important tourist destination in the 19th century. In particular, the commissioning of the scheduled boats on Lake Thun in 1835 and the opening of the railway line to Bern in 1858 led to an increase in tourism. The former Bellevue, Beau-Rivage and Thunerhof hotels were built during this time. The heyday of tourism in Thun ended with the First World War.
