Tijuana is the sister city of the US San Diego, separated from which by a moat that follows for a long stretch the boundary line between United States is Mexico as shown in the photo alongside. It is an extremely dangerous city so you will have to be very careful if you want to cross the San Ysidro border crossing and in any case you would do well to avoid staying there.
Geographical notes
Tijuana is the westernmost city in mainland Latin America. It is bordered to the north by the US county of San Diego, to the south with the municipalities of Rosarito is Ensenada, to the east with the municipality of Tecate and to the west it overlooks the Pacific Ocean.
Background
The city of Tijuana is located in a region originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians, a population of hunters and gatherers. The Europeans arrived in 1542 when the Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explored the coastal stretch of the Baja California.
In 1848, following the Mexican-American War, Mexico lost theUpper California and Tijuana began to change its face by becoming an important center on the border with the United States.
During the Prohibition era, many US tourists went there to participate in legal drinking and gambling. As tourism declined in the 1950s, the city began to gear up and began to develop a great variety of attractions and activities to offer visitors. Today the border between Tijuana and San Diego it is the most traveled in the world.

Safety
Tijuana has a reputation for being a very dangerous city. Crime is linked to drug smuggling and the gangs that dispute it. The only areas of the city that are a bit safer are Avenida Revolucion and las Playas. Everything else is inaccessible. Of course, drug smugglers do not target tourists but it can happen that they get involved in shootings and lose their lives as happened to many Tijuana residents. The most dangerous areas are those close to the border, the Norte area and the Este area. The first is a place of prostitution with countless brothels frequented by Americans.
However, you will also have to defend yourself against customs officials and extremely corrupt police so if you have medicines, make sure they are accompanied by a medical prescription.
