Tourist Attractions

Stave church
1  Torpo stave church. The stave church dates from the 12th century and is the only surviving stave church in Hallingdal. The current tower-like appearance, unusual for a Norwegian stave church, is the result of a number of demolitions that have taken place over the centuries, leaving only this presumably smaller part of the church. Originally the church was supposed to be demolished for the new church in 1880, but was then saved by a private association and the new church was built right next door.Open: June - August daily 8.30 a.m. - 6 p.m.

2  Torpo Kirke (New Church). The new church dates from 1880 and is right next to the stave church. The architect's white building Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe forms a clear contrast to the dark wood of the stave church, which is almost 700 years older.
