Trani is a city of Land of Bari in province of Barletta-Andria-Trani.

To know

Geographical notes

The city is located on the Adriatic coast 43 km north of Bari, at an altitude of 7 meters above sea level. A small natural inlet, generated in ancient times by the mouth of a river that has now disappeared, corresponds to the city port. The territory is mainly flat, although it falls in the extreme northern portion of the Lower Murgia of Bari, characterized by a series of terraces, whose maximum altitude is reached at the Sant'Elia morning (about 200 meters above sea level), which slope down towards the coast. The entire territory is crossed by numerous blades, among which the most important is Lama Paterno, which marks the border with the municipality of Bisceglie.

When to go

The climate of Trani is typically Mediterranean. Being a coastal city, the relative humidity remains very high throughout the year, with an average value of 70%. The sea breeze means that summer temperatures do not generally rise above 32 °. Only in case of strong libeccio winds, due to the favonic effect, can it reach and sometimes exceed 40 ° C.

Winter temperatures are also quite low. However, it is not uncommon for the cold north-eastern air to break out, which can sometimes lead to precipitation even with a snowy nature. The rains are concentrated mainly in autumn and winter, almost absent in the summer and mostly stormy.

Background

The origins of the city are lost in the mists of time. Some archaeological finds (traces of Bronze Age settlements in Capo Colonna) attest to its prehistoric origins, but the most concrete traces arrive not before the Roman conquest. Peutingeriana, the medieval copy of an old road map of the ancient Rome.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine period began in Puglia, characterized by a pause of Lombard domination and continuous threats from the sea by the Saracens. However, the Middle Ages were the golden age of the city.

  • 1 Trani Cathedral (Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino). - The symbol of Trani can be considered its cathedral dedicated to San Nicola Pellegrino. It is a building built in Romanesque style using a particular stone of Trani, a typical material of the area, extracted from the quarries of the city. A distinctive feature of this church is the pointed arch built in the passage located under the bell tower. The cathedral has become part of the "Italian wonders". • 2 Colonna Monastery, Piazzale S. Maria di Colonna. The church of Santa Maria di Colonna, located on the small peninsula of Capo Colonna, is just over a mile from the city center, once outside the urban area, but now included in the center of a thriving tourist-residential area. It was founded, together with the adjacent Benedictine monastery, between the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century, by the noble Goffredo Siniscalco from Trani. The main facade makes use of decorative elements typical of Romanesque architecture: the rose window, an arch worked and supported by agile columns, an architrave of the finest workmanship (coming from a pagan monument) and a series of hanging arches of the cusp. In the church there is the wooden crucifix of the fifteenth century, outraged by the Saracen pirates and a precious altar donated by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, in exchange for the relics of Saint Stephen, which were venerated here until 1684. Currently the monastery is used for cultural initiatives , Jazz and Classical music concerts inside the splendid cloister or in the external courtyard. Remarkable is the panoramic view which can be enjoyed, climbing to the top, from which it is possible to observe the coast in front of the promenade, up to the municipal villa with the cathedral in the background. • 3 Scolanova Synagogue. It is the only medieval synagogue in southern Italy and the most important place of Jewish worship in the country below Naples. You get there by the winding streets of Giudecca, the former Jewish quarter, and you go up a side staircase - if it is open; it is generally closed and is open on Saturdays (shabbat) or special holidays, it is good to inquire first. The synagogue had been reused as a Christian church after the expulsion of the Jews from the city, therefore an image of the Madonna was placed inside it, now covered by a curtain to respect the rules of worship. As in all synagogues it is good practice to access it - by male visitors - with the kippah, the traditional headdress, which should be provided at the entrance.
