Triesen (Tresa in Alemannic) is a city of Liechtenstein.

To know

Triesen is the third largest municipality in Liechtenstein and contains several historic churches dating back to the 15th century. It also has a textile factory from 1863 which is considered a historical monument in all respects.

Geographical notes

It is located about 5 km south of the state capital Vaduz, located between Vaduz, Triesenberg is Balzers, bordering to the south with the Canton of Grisons (Switzerland) and to the west with the Canton of St. Gallen (Switzerland).

The municipal area also includes the highest point in Liechtenstein, the Grauspitz, with its 2,599 meters.

Background

Historians and archaeologists have discovered that the ancient settlements of Triesen, also dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, have all been repeatedly destroyed by natural events, such as floods and landslides.

St. Mamerta Chapel
  • St. Gallus Church (Pfarrkirche St. Gallus). Built in 1455 and rebuilt in 1994 as the town hall square church.
  • St. Mamerta Chapel (St. Mamerta Kapelle, or San Mamerto). The oldest chapel in the country, built between the 9th and 10th centuries. Inside you will find precious Gothic images and carved altars.
  • Kosthaus. Building built in 1873, which was once the home of the workers of a textile factory. It is considered the oldest multi-family building in the country and was declared a national monument in 2006. Since 2009 it has been used as a nursery.
  • Chapel of the Madonna (Marienkapelle). Romanesque building dating back to the early 12th century and restored in 1964.
  • Old Town. The course that crosses the urban center of Triesen leads towards the Rhine valley about a hundred meters from the first medieval chapel of San Mamerta located above the settlement.
  • Power plant. In operation since 1927, it is one of Liechtenstein's power plants, which contains the Principality of Liechtenstein's electrification history museum.

Itineraries

There's a panoramic trail leading first on a road that passes through a natural pasture and hedges. At the end of this forest road you will come to an extremely steep slope above the village. Depending on the season and the vegetation you can enjoy a panoramic view of Triesen and its surroundings on both sides of the Rhine.
