Torshavn (Faroese Torshavn) is the capital of Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands (in German: Sheep islands) are an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark. The small town of Tórshavn is the political, economic and intellectual center of the Faroe Islands.

The name of the city comes from the Germanic god Thor (Faroese: Goal) and the Danish-Scandinavian word for port, havn. The city was first mentioned in a document in 1075. As early as around the year 800, the first settlers from Scandinavia established a supraregional Ting meeting on the Tinganes peninsula located here.

The tranquil city has 12,410 inhabitants (2014). It is one of the smallest capitals in the world.

By plane

The Vágar airport is the only airport in the Faroe Islands, it is located on the island of Vágar near the village Sørvágur. There are regular line connections, especially after Copenhagen, but also partly in other European cities such as Barcelona or London. The journey time by car is about an hour, the bus line 300 runs up to ten times a day to the airport.

At the information desk you can buy prepaid SIM cards from Føroya Tele to buy. There are five car rental companies in the airport.

Nearby is the village Sørvág which is ideal for an excursion, but also offers several accommodations.

Children 7-15 years and pensioners pay half the price. Payment by prepaid card has been preferred since May 2020. This also brings about 15% savings. Sørvág

Sørvág is a village by the airport, which can be reached on foot (approx. 1.7 km). From the capital you can take the airport bus or those that connect with the ferry to Mykines.

The fjord (Sørvágsfjørður) is also one in which pilot whales are slaughtered in summer, the so-called Grindadráp, practiced on the beach.

Mykines

The island of Mykineshólmur, only 45 hectares in size, with the lighthouse is connected to the main island by a narrow bridge. There is a large seal colony on the northern cliff. There are also around 2500 breeding pairs of the northern gannet, which with its 180 centimeter wingspan is one of the largest bird species in the Faroe Islands.

Directions
