Torshavn (Faroese Torshavn) is the capital of Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands (in German: Sheep islands) are an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark. The small town of Tórshavn is the political, economic and intellectual center of the Faroe Islands.
background
The name of the city comes from the Germanic god Thor (Faroese: Goal) and the Danish-Scandinavian word for port, havn. The city was first mentioned in a document in 1075. As early as around the year 800, the first settlers from Scandinavia established a supraregional Ting meeting on the Tinganes peninsula located here.
The tranquil city has 12,410 inhabitants (2014). It is one of the smallest capitals in the world.
getting there
By plane
The Vágar airport is the only airport in the Faroe Islands, it is located on the island of Vágar near the village Sørvágur. There are regular line connections, especially after Copenhagen, but also partly in other European cities such as Barcelona or London. The journey time by car is about an hour, the bus line 300 runs up to ten times a day to the airport.
At the information desk you can buy prepaid SIM cards from Føroya Tele to buy. There are five car rental companies in the airport.
Nearby is the village Sørvág which is ideal for an excursion, but also offers several accommodations.
By bus
The SSL buses to rural regions depart from 1 Bus station. Telephone route information (24 hours): 34 30 30.
Children 7-15 years and pensioners pay half the price. Payment by prepaid card has been preferred since May 2020. This also brings about 15% savings. You can buy them at the main office in Sjógøta 5 in Tvøroyri, at the bus station in Tórshavn and at Smyril-Ferry kiosk. There is one for tourists Travel Card, which is valid for 4 or 7 days (500 dkr). With it you have free travel on all buses and ferries (except Mykines). They are sold at the airport information kiosk and at the bus station.

Tórshavn is the home port of the Norröna, a modern car ferry, the Tórshavn with Hirtshals in Denmark and Seyðisfjörður in Eastern Iceland connects (Smyrill Line).

- 1 Tinganes Peninsula: Rocky peninsula with the government district between the east and west harbors. The old town of Tórshavn consists of narrow streets and mainly houses with wooden facades painted red or black and grass or tin roofs. Most of the houses were built after a fire in 1673. You can walk through the government district without any police or security control.
- 2 Skansin Fortress
Fortress with red and white lighthouse on a hill in front of the east harbor. The original fortress was built in 1580 to protect Tórshavn from pirate attacks, but was destroyed several times. The current building dates from 1865. The fortress is freely accessible. One has a beautiful view of the east harbor, the government district on the Tinganes peninsula and the offshore island of Nólsoy.
- 2 West harbor (Vestaravág): The Westhafen (Old Harbor) is located west of the Tinganes peninsula. Sailboats and yachts anchor here. This is followed by the shipyards and docks of the industrial port. Many cafés and restaurants as well as a few shops can be found on the harbor pier.
- 3 Viðarlundin City Park: Park created in the city in 1880 with two small ponds, trees, sculptures by Faroese artists and at the highest point a memorial to the seamen who died in World War II.
- 4 Kongaminnið Lookout point on a hill east of the city center with an obelisk from 1882. Nice view of large parts of Tórshavn and the offshore island of Nólsoy.
- Harbor Church: The white painted wooden church from 1788 stands above the harbor.
- Aquarium: 5 Føroya Sjósavn. Open only on Sat. Sun 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.
- 6 Hoyvíksgarður National Museum and Museum Village. Open: 10 am-5pm, museum village only May 15-15. SeptPrice: 60 dkr.

A small sandy "beach" is 1 Sandagerð.
International matches of the national soccer team take place in 2 Tórsvøllur with 6000 seats. The capital city clubs HB Tórshavn and B36 Tórshavn play on artificial turf next door in the Gundadalur stadium.

Sørvág
Sørvág is a village by the airport, which can be reached on foot (approx. 1.7 km). From the capital you can take the airport bus or those that connect with the ferry to Mykines.
The fjord (Sørvágsfjørður) is also one in which pilot whales are slaughtered in summer, the so-called Grindadráp, practiced on the beach.

Mykines
On the westernmost Faroe island of the small 8 Mykines In addition to the village with 40 houses, sheep and the lighthouse, you can see thousands and thousands of birds, especially puffins, up close. Visitors have to pay a "hiking fee" of 250 dkr.
The island of Mykineshólmur, only 45 hectares in size, with the lighthouse is connected to the main island by a narrow bridge. There is a large seal colony on the northern cliff. There are also around 2500 breeding pairs of the northern gannet, which with its 180 centimeter wingspan is one of the largest bird species in the Faroe Islands.
