Background
Union Island was initially inhabited by Amerindian Arawak and Caribe populations. From the 18th century it became an agricultural center in the hands of the British and French, who imported African slaves, mostly from Cameroon and Angola. The population of the island at that time was 5000 inhabitants.
After the abolition of slavery, the population (increased by European exiles) devoted itself to farming, subsistence agriculture and fishing.
