Geographical notes
Upolu is formed by a large basaltic volcano that rises from the seabed of the western Pacific Ocean and is the second largest and most populated of the Samoa Islands, located east of the "Big Island", Savai'i. The island's volcano, Mount Fito, has historically not recorded eruptions.
Background
Between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, the island was sometimes called Ojalava or Ojolava.
