Uruguay - country in South America, above The Atlantic, bordering on Argentina from the west and Brazil from the north. It is the capital of the state Montevideo, the Atlantic port at the mouth of La Plata. On the other side of this estuary lies the capital of Argentina - Buenos Aires. Formerly, Uruguay was part of the Viceroyalty of La Plata and was called Banda Oriental (East Bank).

Of these, nearly half of the city's population lives in the country's capital. According to official data from 2011, Uruguay had over 120 cities with a population of over 1,000. residents. Montevideo, the country's capital, was the only city with over a million inhabitants; 1 city with a population of 100,000 ÷ 500,000; 7 cities with a population of 50,000 ÷ 100,000; 13 cities with a population of 25,000 ÷ 50,000 and the rest of the cities below 25,000 residents.
