Geographical notes
It is especially known for the natural beauty of the Himalayan range, the Bhabar and the Terai. Two important Indian rivers are born in this region, the Ganges in Gangotri and the Yamuna in Yamunotri.
Background
On November 9, 2000, it was created as the twenty-seventh Indian state, deriving it from the Himalayas and the neighboring northwestern districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Culture and traditions
The natives of this region are generally referred to as Garhwali or Kumaoni, depending on their place of origin. There are many sacred Hindu temples and pilgrimage centers throughout the state.
