Uzes is a french City in the department Gard and belongs to the region Languedoc-Roussillon.
background
Politically, the city belongs to the Arrondissement of Nîmes and is the administrative seat of the Canton of Uzès.
The city is located around 22 kilometers north of Nîmes on a hill with the river at its foot Your arises. The source of the Eure was taken and fed the 50 kilometers long Roman aqueduct to Nîmes, whose most imposing structure is the Pont du Gard is on which the aqueduct crosses the Gardon river valley. The Roman settlement Ucetia developed into today's city due to the construction activity for this aqueduct.
The city was named a bishopric as early as the 5th century and remained that way until the French Revolution. The Lords of Uzès received the title of Viscount in 1318. The county was founded in 1565 by Charles IX raised to the duchy. Became the first Duke of Uzès Antoine de Crussol appointed. Since this honor was given to a non-member of the French royal family for the first time, Uzès still refers to himself as Premier Duché de France. The dukes (Ducs d'Uzès) always held a special position at the French royal court and were entrusted with special tasks. In ceremonies they were allowed to come first after the Princes du Sang, the nobles with direct descent from the French royal family, and take on special tasks.
When the bishop confessed to the Reformation in 1543, a strong Huguenot community developed in Uzès. After the wars of religion, a considerable part of the population who had professed the "New Faith" were killed or expelled. It was only with the French Revolution that the power of the Catholic Church was permanently curtailed.
