Kunming Undoubtedly the center of Yunnan province. Whether you will pass through here or not, you want to be in Yunnan. |
West Yunnan The west side of Kunming and where the hills are starting to get stiffer. This is a very popular area for backpackers. It includes Dali and Chu Hung |
East Yunnan Full of beautiful views of the neighboring hills Guizhou and Guangxi transformed into the high and mountainous plateau of Yunnan province. This area includes tourist attractions not often visited by backpackers. It includes the districts of Chieu Thong, Khuc Tinh Van Son |
Southeast Yunnan Surprisingly diverse, in one day you can pass through arid barren land, lush pine forests, barren hills, tropical rainforests. The urban center in this area of Yunnan is very compact and it is quite easy to get around from city to city to see the sights. It includes Ngoc Khe and Hong Ha and autonomous prefectures of Ha Nhi & Di people) |
Southern Yunnan Geographically and ethnically part of Southeast Asia, but politically part of China. Forests cover most of the terrain and this is probably China's best area to escape the winter. It includes the cities of Simao and Xishuangbanna, a major tourist area |
West Yunnan The place has very rough digital terrain. Once the position of famous Burmese road, is now one of China's most attractive spots. It includes Lam Son, Bao Son, Duc Hoanh and Na Giang. |
Northwest Yunnan Part of ancient and historical Tibet within Yunnan province boundaries. Many visitors come here to experience Tibet without having to enter the actual province and follow the road to West Sichuan. You will find towering mountain ranges and interesting local culture here. It includes Lijiang Diqing. |

overview
Yunnan is the southwesternmost province of China, with the Tropic of Cancer running through the southern part of the province. The province covers an area of about 394,000 km², accounting for 4.1% of the total area of China. It is bordered by Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guizhou Province to the east, Sichuan Province to the north, and Tibet Autonomous Region to the northwest. The province also shares a 4,060-kilometer border with Myanmar to the west, Laos to the south, and Vietnam to the southeast.
The provinces and autonomous regions are bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi. The countries bordering this province are Vietnam (contiguous Vietnamese provinces include Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang; administrative units of Yunnan contiguous to Vietnam include Hong Ha, Van Son, Pho Nhi town; the main border crossings by road and railway are at Ha Khau - Lao Cai), Laos (in Boten) and Myanmar (with the main border gate at Thuy Le, this is also is the only border crossing that allows travel for non-Chinese or Burmese nationals).
Language
The official language of Yunnan province is Mandarin Chinese. The area is home to many dialects from the Chinese, Tibetan and Thai language families. Yunnan is home to many ethnic minorities, each with their own different language.
Local municipalities will often have their own version of Mandarin which is a sub-dialect of the southwestern dialect of Mandarin common to Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. Despite having a heavy accent, the dialect of China is very similar to Northern with only slight regional differences in grammar and pronunciation.
Arrive
By train
Until 2003, Kunming was accessed by rail from Hanoi, Vietnam via a narrow gauge railway built by the French. The Chinese side of this railway is closed to passenger transport so the best way to get down to the border is by bus to Hekou (from where you can cross the border to Lao Cai and train to Hanoi), or by air directly from Kunming to Hanoi.
There are railway lines from Hanoi to Nanning, Guangxi, and one with some spectacular scenery from Nanning to Kunming. A Kunming railway connects Central China via Guiyang, Guizhou, and a third south to Kunming from Chengdu, Sichuan. All train routes offer breathtaking scenic views, with stretches of bridges and tunnels.
By air
The airport in Kunming is the biggest airport in Yunnan, very near to Kunming, the taxi fare is around ¥12-30 if you want to go to any Kunming place from the airport. Note that half of 2012, the old airport will be closed and the new airport "Kunming Changshui International Airport" will be used. The new airport is located 22 km outside the urban area. There are buses with Kunming city. It is necessary to reserve enough time to get to the new airport.
Kunming has direct flights from Beijing, Xiamen and other Chinese cities. There are also flights to Southeast Asia. Such as Seoul, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Bangkok, Vientiane, Mandalay, Yangon, Dhaka. Laos Airlines and Lao consulates are located in Camellia and Kunming hotels.
