Understand
The Jequitinhonha valley is a region located in the northeast of the state of Minas Gerais. Historically, the region is marked by drought and its problems, and it also carries the stigma of being miserable. In fact, this is not the case, there has been considerable development in cities in recent years. The valley has surviving traces of black and indigenous culture. There is a cultural festival held every year in a chosen city in the valley, the FESTIVALE (Vale do Jequitinhonha Popular Culture Festival), which brings together various artists, composers, folklorists, singers, actors and many other culture lovers. The Jequitinhonha River, the longest river in the region, supports several families and is much recited in poems by poets of the valley.
