On the upper reaches of the Versilia river

The Versilia belongs to the province of Lucca, in the northwestern part of the Tuscany. The area includes the municipalities of Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, Massarosa, Seravezza and Stazzema. It also includes the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli Park in the south and the Parco delle Apuane in the north.

background

In a narrower sense, the Versilia only includes the places along the 24 km long river Versilia , who comes from Monte Nona initially as Fiume Vezza flows from the Apuan Alps to the plain and at Pietrasanta as Versilia flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The once swampy and malaria-contaminated coastal landscape was only drained after the 17th century.
