Viareggio is a city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, it belongs to the region Versilia in the Tuscan Province of Lucca.
background
Viareggio was founded in the 12th century when the city Lucca on the coastal road at the mouth of the Canale Burlamacca a fort with the name Castrum de Via Regia erected. In 1543 the fortification was built Torre Matilde built. However, a larger settlement could only emerge when the swampy coastal region was drained in the 18th century and as a result malaria was pushed back. In 1820 Viareggio received city rights and in 1847 Viareggio became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The first public baths were built in Viareggio in the 19th century and the city developed into an attractive bathing resort.
The district Torre del Lago Puccini ' is a little further south on Lake Massaciuccoli. The composer Giacomo Puccini liked this place, he bought a villa here and stayed until the end of his life.
