Information
Country

the Burgundy vineyard is located in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in the departments ofYonne, of the Golden Coast and of Saone-et-Loire, in the east of France.

Understand

  • An itinerary, necessarily included: the tourist visit of its sites and its heritage; the discovery of its inhabitants with their culture and their environment. Obviously, in a wine region the discovery of their assets can also be a complementary goal.
  • The interest of this inventory is to locate the names of farms sometimes known throughout France, Europe or the world, and which for connoisseurs will be able to create a route with unparalleled simplification.
  • the Burgundy vineyard is divided into sub-regions, it extends over 250 km in length from the north of Chablis to the south of Mâconnais:
    • The vineyards of Yonne (Lower Burgundy)
    • The vineyards of the Côte-d'Or (the Côte d'Or is made up of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune);
    • The vineyards of Saône-et-Loire (Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais).
  • Burgundy produces red wines, made from Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes, and white wines, made from Chardonnay and Aligoté grapes. It is produced:
    • 60.5% white wines
    • 31.5% red and rosé wines
    • 8% crémant
  • The vineyard is highly fragmented and the quality of the wines quite heterogeneous depending on the appellations, “climates” according to the local term, but also estates, trading houses and cooperative cellars.

84 Controlled Designations of Origin (AOC) make up the Burgundy vineyard

    • 6 AOC regional appellations
    • 45 communal or village or local AOC appellations, including 562 “premier crus” denominations
    • 33 appellations "AOC Grands Crus"

Regional AOC appellations

They constitute the basic level of the hierarchy, and are harvested in the 4 departments of wine-growing Burgundy: Yonne, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire and the arrondissement of Villefranche-sur-Saône in the Rhône (which is not in Burgundy, but the decrees allow a Beaujolais to be folded into one of the regional Burgundy appellations).

  • Of the 6 generic "regional" appellations, there are:
    • Burgundy (It can be produced by 55 municipalities of Yonne, 91 municipalities of Côte-d'Or, 154 municipalities of Saône-et-Loire and 85 municipalities of Rhône). The Burgundy appellation includes fourteen geographical names (chitry, côte-chalonnaise, côte-d'Auxerre, coasts-du-couchois, côte-Saint-Jacques, coulanges-la-vineuse, épineuil, Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune, Hautes -côtes-de-nuit, the-chapter, the-chapel-notre-dame, montrecul et tonnerre).

Burgundy red ”(made mainly with pinot noir NN 4),“ bourgogne clairet ”(pinot noir or gamay),“ bourgogne nouveau or primeur ”and“ bourgogne blanc ”(mainly chardonnay BN 5).

    • Bourgogne-aligoté (Aligoté grape variety).
    • Bourgogne-passe-tout-grains (vat blended wine - In Gamay and Pinot Noir).
    • Coteaux-bourguignons (formerly Burgundy-Grand-Ordinary) (grape varieties used: pinot noir, gamay, caesar and tressot for red and rosé wines; chardonnay, aligoté, melon de Bourgogne and sacy for white wines. Red wines represent the vast majority of production).
    • Crémant de Bourgogne (sparkling wine) [wine made using the Champagne method. Chardonnay, Aligoté, Pinot Noir (alone or in assembly) can be the grape varieties used.].
    • Sparkling Burgundy (sparkling wine) (grape varieties that can be included in its composition are pinot noir, chardonnay, gamay, aligoté, melon de Bourgogne and sacy).

The two smaller regional appellations which are often referred to as "sub-regional" only interest one region: côte-de-beaune-villages and mâcon (and its 27 geographical names), which are often included among the communal appellations.

Communal, village or local AOC appellations

With 45 communal appellations or “villages” (including Côte-de-Beaune-Villages and Mâcon). It is the name of a town which is most often used as the name of the appellation. We differentiate:

  • inter-municipal appellations, which bear the name of the most famous municipality and which often include two municipalities, sometimes more (up to 5 municipalities for the Côte-de-Nuits-Villages). There are the appellations of gevrey-chambertin, chassagne-montrachet, mercurey, montagny, pouilly-fuissé ...
  • the communal appellations, which bear the name of the only commune in the AOC concerned. There are the appellations volnay, pommard, meursault, beaune, morey-saint-denis, fixin, bouzeron ...
  • The Premiers Crus

The 562 “premier crus” names on these “village” appellations (which correspond to 10% of the production), are geographical names within the “communal” appellations. In the local appellation concerned, these are localities (we say "climates In Burgundy) recognized as particularly favorable to the cultivation of vines in terms of quality, which are distinguished by the mention "premier cru". For example, there are 27 different denominations for the premier crus harvested in the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges (such as the nights-saint-georges "Les Pruliers") for only a hundred hectares. The notion of premier cru is an optional mention of a geographical name which can be added to the name of a local appellation, but it is not an AOC as such. On the other hand, the use of this term generally obliges the winegrower to use more restrictive wine-growing practices than those of the AOC.

AOC Grands Crus appellations

The 33 “AOC Grands Crus” appellations correspond to 1.5% of production, in Côte-d'Or and Chablis. The reputation of localities is such that the reference to the municipality becomes unnecessary. Conversely, the municipalities have often added the name of a grand cru to their name. This is why many municipalities have a double name (Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Chassagne-Montrachet ...
