Yonne department

Yonne is a department in the French region Burgundy. It is named after the river of the same name. The region is known for its wine from the growing area around chablis.

Yonne, serial number 89, borders the department in the northeast Aube, in the east Côte-d'Or, in the south Nièvre, in the west Loiret and in the northwest Seine-et-Marne.

There are regional trains (TER) from Paris-Bercy to this department practically every hour, with stops among others. in Sens (just under 1 hour), Joigny and 1 Laroche-Migennes (just under 1½ hours); five times a day to Auxerre (approx. 1:45 hours), twice a day to Sermizelles Vézelay and Avallon.

The landscapes of today's department were already inhabited by people in the Paleolithic Age. The best evidence of this can be found in the valley of the Cure, a tributary of the Yonne. In the 1 Arcy-sur-Cure caves at Arcy-sur-Cure there are Stone Age cave paintings from around 28,000 to 33,000 years BC. Chr.

Churches and monasteries

  • Abbey and Basilica of Ste-Marie-Madeleine in Vezelay, important Romanesque monastery and pilgrimage church, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Palaces and castles

  • Ratilly Castle, fortified four-wing castle with mighty round towers at the four corners from around 1270, was originally a moated castle, but was converted into a castle over time; today a cultural center with concerts and exhibitions by contemporary artists, just under 50 km south-east of Auxerre.   • Guédelon, a castle has been built here since 1997 using only techniques from the 13th century; it is scheduled for completion in 2023 Near Treigny, 45 km southwest of Auxerre.
  • The Renaissance castles in Yonne are already reminiscent of the castles of the Loire

  • Colette Museum. The Colette Museum in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, commemorates the writer, variety artist and journalist Colette (1873–1954), the first woman to have a state funeral in France.
