Win is a city of Tuscany.

To know

Municipality of the metropolitan city of Florence, is known for being the birthplace of the famous genius Leonardo da Vinci, of which, in 2019, the 500th anniversary of his death occurs ( Amboise, May 2, 1519).

Geographical notes

It is located in the northern part of Tuscany, on the slopes of Montalbano, a hilly massif rich in vineyards and olive groves and terraces supported by characteristic dry stone walls. It is 44 km from Florence and 24 from Pistoia.

The oldest part of Vinci has an almond-shaped plant, unusual in this area of Tuscany. Seen from above, it suggests a two-masted boat (where the two masts would be the tower of the Rocca dei Conti Guidi and the bell tower of the church of Santa Croce). For this reason, the historic center of the Leonardian village is also known as "Castel della Nave".

Background

At the plebiscite of 1860 for the annexation of Tuscany to Sardinia, the "yes" did not obtain the majority of those entitled (738 out of a total of 1784), with a record abstention, a symptom of opposition to the annexation.

Vinci was freed from the Nazi-Fascist occupation by the partisan brigade "Silvano Fedi" of Pistoia, led by Enzo Capecchi and Artese Benesperi, after long clashes with the Germans.

For reasons related to its historical importance, the municipality of Vinci was granted the title of city by decree of the President of the Republic Luigi Einaudi dated July 15, 1954.
