Virovitica is the capital of the Virovitica-Podravina County and is located in the historical region Slavonia about 20 km south of the Hungarian border and the river Drava.

background

Virovitica was already settled in ancient times. In 1234 Virovitica became a free royal city. Virovitica was the seat of Verőce County at the time of the Kingdom of Hungary. Since Croatia's independence, Virovitica has also been a county administrative center again. Virovitica itself was not destroyed during the Yugoslav wars of 1992-1995, in contrast to the areas a few dozen kilometers south and east, which were massively affected by fighting.
