Vientiane - Viêng Chăn

Pha That Luang, the national symbol of Laos

Vientiane (ວຽງຈັນ) Viet Chan) is the capital city Laos. It is the political, cultural and economic center of the country Laos. The city is located on the left bank of the Mekong River, the other bank is Thailand.

overview

Compared with the bustling capitals of the countries Southeast Asia On the other hand, Vientiane's relaxed atmosphere makes the city feel like a small town. After you've visited Vientiane's temples, it's always best to wander down the riverside, relaxing with cold Beerlao - the national beer Laos - and watch the sun set over the Mekong.

Of course, this booming tourism industry is changing by slowly but surely bringing a lot of Thai and Chinese visitors to this formerly sleepy city. Just like other Southeast Asian capitals, Vientiane is experiencing a construction boom.

History

Settled here at least 1000, Vientiane became an important administrative city of the Kingdom of Lan Xang ("million elephants") in 1545. plundered by the Siamese in 1828, Vientiane was recovered in time to be once again chosen as the capital of the protectorate of Laos was occupied by the French, a position it held after independence (1953) and after the communists passed in 1975. Today, Vientiane is the largest city in Laos, with an estimated population of 210,000 in the city and some 700,000 in the province of Vientiane.

Arrive

By air

Wattay International Airport is the largest airport Laos. There are direct flights between this airport and Hanoi, Danang, Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh.

By train/train

By road

From Vietnam You can go by road along Highway 9 (Quang Tri) through Lao Bao border gate or Highway 12 through Cha Lo border gate (Quang Binh) via Laos. Two-lane paved road.

From Cambodia

Bus from Phnom Penh to Vientiane costs about 50 USD if you buy a 'VIP' ticket: including a bed for the evening leg; however, unless you have a travel companion you will have to share a small bed with any other passenger (of the same sex).

At the border Laos-Cambodia, you must complete all administrative procedures.

Ignore what your travel agent or bus driver tells you the Phnom Penh-Vieng Chan trip usually involves 4 separate bus stops, not 2. From the Phnom Penh-Lao and Pakse-Vientiane borders should suffice. However, between the border and Pakse (Southern Laos) you will be asked to change to a minibus, sit on someone else's lap,...because the bus will go around to each guesthouse to drop off passengers in the area. You will eventually be transferred to another truck, and the process repeats itself. It takes 4-6 hours and it is also difficult to know where you are, where you are going and who is responsible.

If the operator tells you to put your luggage on a second bus (due to seating issues), it is liable to vanish along the road.

The bus route from Phnom Penh to Vientiane or vice versa takes an average of 27 hours.

Banks and money changers

Banks and money changers abound in the city center, and money changers have a competitive advantage over banks. The best prices are at the shops along Rue Lane Xang in the northern part of Talat Sao morning market.

Phongsavanh Bank on Thanon Samsenthai is Vientiane's newest private bank and currency exchange until 20:30 on weekdays, and briefly on weekends.

BCEL has money changers at the corner of Thanon Fa Ngum, Thanon Setthathilath (near Joma), Thanon Pang Kham as well as at the friendship bridge, just through the visas. This bank doesn't charge commissions, offers better conversion rates, and is open longer than most local banks. BCEL also has a cashier counter.

Home Ideal a Chinese shop, offering a good exchange rate. The shop is a 2 minute walk on the next street on from Phongsavanh bank.
