background

The center of Germany and a Germanic archaeological site are located in the Vogtei.

It was first mentioned in a document in 810 under the name Thurnilohum, on the occasion of a donation from Count Erpho to Würzburg. The village of Dornelohn was founded in 932, which translates as a forest of thorns. Heinrich the 1st left it to Abbot Meingoz von Hersfeld. Thereafter, Count Wigger von Bielstein received rights and possessions in the bailiwick. Wigger built the Peter and Paul Church, which was completed in 987. At the same time, the Lords of Treffurth owned properties in the Bailiwick. In 1123 the Archbishop of Mainz set up a provost in Dorla. Langula was first mentioned in a document on July 10, 1278. The name is derived from "lang am Lohn", which means long by the forest. Over time, the Treffurther became robber barons and plundered the neighboring areas of Mainz, Saxony and Hesse. The affected sovereigns defeated the robber barons and now also raised claims to ownership of the Mark Dorla. Everyone now appointed a bailiff as administrator. The Mark Dorla thus became the bailiwick. From 1785 to 1786 the bailiffs went to Vienna in order to have Emperor Joseph II finally clarify the ownership situation. But there was only a meager comparison. From 1816 the bailiwick belonged to Prussia and today to the Unstrut-Hainich district.
