In the 16th century Vohenstrauß was the residence of the Count Palatine von der Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Vohenstrauß-Parkstein, the city is still called the today Pfalzgrafenstadt.

- The Castle Festival Leuchtenberg have been organized by the Vohenstrauss City Stage since 1982. The main venue is the inner courtyard of the Leuchtenberg castle ruins, an open-air theater with roofed spectator seats, and Friedrichsburg Castle.
- The Pfalzgraf-Friedrich-Weg is a natural history and nature trail around Vohenstrauß, with six information boards and a length of 16.5 km.
