Volendam is a village in Waterland in the province North Holland. It is on Markermeer and educates Edam the municipality of Edam-Volendam.

background

Volendam was originally called Perfectlywhen it was the confluence of the E or IJe (where the city of Edam is) into the Zuiderzee. In 1357 the Edam people dug a shorter connection between the Purmer Sea and the Zuiderzee. Then a dam was built in front of the old port of Edam and the old port was filled - hence the name Vollendam. Farmers and fishermen soon settled here.

Nowadays, Volendam is a place with around 22,000 inhabitants that is still growing. Tourists from all over the world come here in search of long-forgotten traditional costumes and fishing boats. They can also find souvenir shops and a ship that can take them to Marken. And a population that differs in its customs, clothing and dialect (Volendams) from the rest of the Netherlands. In addition, Volendam has historically always been a Catholic village in an otherwise Protestant environment. The village used to be known because it had the highest number of Dutch missionaries and ordinations per square kilometer. Although this number, like church attendance, is declining due to secularization and dechurchification, there has been a resurgence of Marian devotion in recent years.

Costumes

The Volendam costume is often photographed and therefore very well known. Although it is not necessarily typical of the previously widespread Dutch costumes, it is now often the role of a "national" costume in the Holland promotion. The girl in Volendam costume has a recognition effect and even becomes a cliché. With the windmill, wooden shoes, and cheese, the picture is complete.

Artist village

In the decades at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Voldendam has developed into a real artist village. At that time there was an artist community in the village around the Hotel Spaander. She was inspired by the life of the fish in the North Sea and along the Zuiderzee. The ports, the ships, the houses, the fishermen, their wives and their children in traditional costumes, the customs - all of this was a real tour of discovery for the artists from England, Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the USA. They often took their paintings, drawings and travelogues back with them to their homelands, but there was one place where their work was vigorously collected: the Hotel Spaander in Volendam.

Paling sound

More recently, Volendam has become known more for its music industry. The village has produced many musicians, some of whom are internationally known. This music is also known as Palingsound (eel sound) because of Volendam's history as a fishing village.

Tourist Attractions

  • 1  Protestantse Stolphoevekerk, Burgemeester Kolfschotenplein 1. Built in 1658 based on a design by Adriaan Nieng. The almost square wooden building has a tent roof decorated with a bell tower. In addition to the centuries-old atmosphere emanating from the church, the hexagonal pulpit made of oak wood with a carved foot on a pedestal made of natural stone, a baptismal grid made of oak and an iron baptismal arch are remarkable. The approximately 200-year-old cabinet organ is also striking. The Stolphoevekerk is still used as a church building and for weddings. Not to be visited.
  • Sint Vincentiuskerk, Dungeon pad 1. Tel.: 31 (0)299 363395. The second oldest church is in the old village center: St. Vincentius Church. Until 1860, the deeply religious Volendam community sometimes had to walk a long distance every day across the Volendamer Pad to the Nicolaas Church in Edam. Only after long pressure on the diocese of Haarlem did it agree to the building of its own church for Volendam. The Vincentius Church was completed in 1860. In the meantime it has been expanded and restored several times. During the holiday season, the church is open to tourists on weekends.
  • Mariakerk, Julianaweg 72. Tel.: 31 (0)299 363434. Volendam grew rapidly after World War II. In 1057 a new church building had to be built: the Mariakirche. It was designed by the architects A. Alberts and H. Oudejans. Modern influences of the zeitgeist of the time with trends such as the Amsterdam School, De Stijl and Bauhaus can be seen in the strict use of brick. The roof construction is reminiscent of a ship, which is not surprising given the origins of Volendam as a fishing village. The interior is wide, open and light with a lot of wood and brick again. The Mariakirche is freely accessible to visitors every day.
  • Het Doolhof. The oldest part of Volendam is known as the "maze". It owes its name to the fact that the development did not follow a clearly defined street pattern. The resulting natural street scene is also in De Oude Kom (Dril, along the Havendijkje and Meerzijde and surroundings) recognizable. It was precisely these narrow streets and authentic houses that had a strong influence on the painters and artists who visited Volendam from 1880 onwards.
  • De Dijk (The Dike). When visiting Volendam, the dike is walked from front to back and back. The view of the IJsselmeer, which changes continuously under the influence of the sun, wind and cloud fields, is the reason for many Volendamers to go outside the door for a lifetime, attracted by the mystical power of the water.
  • 2  Visa lag, Haven 43. The fish tee, which is largely made of wood, is a rare and well-preserved monument, erected in 1934 on behalf of the cooperative teeing-off association G. A. St. Vincentius. The fish tee located in the center of the port of Volendam is a striking point for visitors. It has lost its function since the nineties, and at school projects or public festivals, the working method of cutting fish is still simulated from time to time.
port
  • port. Today the scenery at the harbor is dominated by sailing yachts, both new and traditional. But there is still a lot going on here, at least in the summer months.
  • 3  Volendams Museum, Zeestraat 41. Tel.: 31 (0)299 369258. In the Volendams Museum you can see how people worked and lived at the end of the 19th century and in the first 50 years of the 20th century. In the museum the visitor can learn how Volendam became famous thanks to the many artists, painters and draftsmen who visited the village and spread their paintings and drawings all over the world. But there is much more to see in the Volendams Museum than the collection of paintings from the international artists' colony. Here you will find an exhibition of volender and national costumes and jewelry. A collection of drawings, sculptures, pottery, photos and postcards. A collection of literary and musical art forms. You will find lifelike old interiors and a cigar tape house with mosaics and decorations made from 11 million cigar tapes. The fishery with its ancillary operations is presented. • Paling Sound Museum, Slobbeland 19. Tel.: 31 (0)299 363373. Paling sound ("Eel sound") describes the classic, typically Dutch style of pop music, which was shaped by successful Volendam bands. The eel stands for an important branch of the economy in Volendam on the one hand and the somewhat smooth music on the other. Well-known representatives of this genre are The Cats (1966-1985), Left Side (1968-1976), BZN (1966-2007), Piet Veerman (ex-The Cats), Jan Keizer (ex-BZN) and Maribelle. Jan Smit (1997-present), Nick & Simon (2006-present) and the 3J’s (2007-present) form the new generation of Volendam musical talents, but do not count themselves as part of the Palingound denominator. The Paling Sound Museum in the Smit-Bokkum pavilion gives an overview of 100 years of Volendammer music history.Open: Tue - Sun from 7 p.m.Price: Admission: € 1.50.
