The paths next to the drainage ditches are typical of Waterland

Waterland is a region in the province North Holland north of Amsterdam. The region is a low-lying bog pasture area, which is criss-crossed by many moats.

Today's Waterland ("Wasserland") encompasses the area of today's municipalities Landsmeer, Purmerend (except de Purmer) and Waterland. Up to the urban development of the district Amsterdam-Noord this area was also part of Waterland, but today is only Landelijk Noord still counted as part of Waterland. The largest residential cores are Edam-Volendam, Monnickendam and Purmerend.

background

Already around the year 1000 the area of today's Waterland was already inhabited. The village of Zuiderwoude already had its own chapel in the 11th century. In the 12th century, the moorland was largely cultivated. The moor was a few meters above sea level, but it was very swampy. In order to divert the water, trenches were dug across the watercourses in the bog. The moor became drier, but sank over time and the land threatened to be flooded, also because of rising sea levels. To prevent this, dikes were built and dams were placed in the watercourses.

Large overflows in the 12th and 13th centuries, which resulted in the Zuiderzee and the Beemster, among other things, forced the Waterlanders to build a sea dike (the Waterlandse Zeedijk) around their territory. Despite this dike, Waterland remained a wet and swampy area where agriculture was impossible, so the farmers switched to cattle breeding. The daily production of dairy products and the lack of their own supply of grain products such as flour created a lively trade which contributed to the development of markets in places like Edam, Monnickendam and Purmerend. These received city rights in 1357, 1356 and 1410.

Dike bridges repeatedly led to large overflows. Well known are the St. Elisabeth flood (1421), All Saints flood (1570) and the water disasters of 1825 (which created the Kinselmeer) and 1916. Since the closure of the Zuiderzee in 1932, the Waterland has not been flooded.

The use of windmills and other improvements in drainage led to the drainage of Buikslotermeer, Broekermeer and Belmermeer in the 17th century (1627).

language

The Waterland dialect has been spoken in Waterland since ancient times. Today it is being displaced more and more by the AN or the Amsterdam. But the Marken and especially the Volendams, both of which are regarded as forms of the Waterland dialect, are spoken to this day.
