Purmerend is a city in the region Waterland in the Dutch province North Holland.

background

Purmerend was created as a small trading settlement for fishermen and boatmen between the lakes Purmer, Beemster and Wijde Wormer. Purmerend developed after 1340: The nobleman Willem Eggert (Lord of Purmerend, Purmerland and Ilpendam) received from Count Willem VI in 1410. permission to build your own castle: Purmersteijn Castle. In 1434 Purmerend got city rights. From 1392 the city owned two monasteries. After the victory of the Wassergeusen over the Spaniards in 1572, the monasteries were closed. Purmersteijn Castle was demolished in 1741 after it fell into disrepair.

The market rights allowed Purmerend to grow into a regional trading center. The city was granted two annual markets and a weekly market, and an important cattle market has also been held here since the end of the 16th century. In the 18th century the city had developed into an important industrial location: three breweries, two jenever distilleries, a gunpowder mill, a turpentine distillery, a soap factory, a vinegar factory, a rope factory, a shipyard and three saw and flour mills.

The city is surrounded by polders: Purmer, Beemster and Wormer. The city became the regional market center, but the population did not grow from around 10,000 to 80,000 until after 1960. At that time, many Amsterdammers moved to this city. Today you commute regularly to work in the capital.
