background

Wormer on the Zaan

The Zaanstreek emerged as the most important industrial area north of Amsterdam. With the blossoming of Amsterdam at the beginning of the 17th century. On the banks of the navigable river Zaan, an area densely built with windmills quickly emerged. In 1630 there were already 53 sawmills. Windmills were used in other industries as well: paint, paper, and other mills quickly followed. Middle of the 17th century one counted around 900 mills. There were 65 shipyards in the villages of the Zaan region, but they were also active in whaling. The main town of Zaandam had a big name in shipbuilding at that time and in 1697 the Russian Tsar Peter I (the Great) came to Zaandam personally to learn shipbuilding. The little house in which he was staying at the time is still standing and is now a tourist workhorse. During the 19th century exchanged the Zaankanters Their mills, with which they now also produce cocoa, mustard, paint and paper, are increasingly being turned against steam engines. Large multinational companies such as Verkade, Ahold, Bruynzeel Keukens, Honig and Duyvis have sprung up in the area and are still based here today. Many of the old factory buildings can still be admired on the banks of the Zaan.
