The Zaanse Schans is a museum village in the Zaanstreek. The partially normally inhabited village is located northwest of Amsterdam in North Holland.

background

The Zaanse Schans is a well-known and very popular open-air attraction with around 900,000 visitors annually and many tourist facilities such as museums, souvenir shops, cafes, old mills and shops, sales of products made here, etc. Formally, however, it is not a museum - most of the houses are inhabited as normal. The quarter was and is being built to preserve the historical heritage of the Zaan region.

The name can be traced back to a fortressjump, which Diederik Sonoy, governor in the service of William of Orange, had erected in 1574 to stop the Spanish troops.

Between 1961 and 1974, many old buildings from the Zaan region were brought to the Zaanse Schans on flatbed trucks and put back in their old splendor (relocated). The existing windmills have been restored. Even later, buildings regularly moved to the Zaanse Schans.

getting there

The village is on the Zaan, right across from Zaandijk at the Julianabrug, between Zaandam and Wormerveer. Outside the season you can try to park in Zaandijk and walk over the bridge, but in summer this is just as crowded and expensive as the parking spaces directly at the museum village. Conversely, you can also make a detour from the museum village to Zaandijk and, for example, use the restaurants there.

Mills

Mills in Zaan's Schanz
De Huisman, still with an old warehouse

The Mills on the Zaan were the first industrial plants: The wind power could drive crankshafts, which in turn drove machines. Due to the proximity to the trading center in Amsterdam and the relatively easy transport via the waterways, up to 600 mills were concentrated in the entire Zaanstreck. Only with the invention of the steam engine did the mills lose their industrial importance. 13 of the old mills still exist, the following of which are in Zaanse Schans.
