Monnickendam is a city in the region Waterland in the dutch province North Holland. Monnickendam is located on the Gouwzee, a tributary of the Markermeers. The city is the seat of the local government of Waterland

background

Historical map from 1649

On February 25, 1355 - the day after St. Matthew - Monnickendam received city rights from the Count of Holland. Monnickendam received important privileges that favored its further growth. A church was built on the spot where today's Kerkstraat, Noordeinde, and Middendam streets meet. Today only that is left of the building Speeltoren ("Play Tower") above.

In 1356 the expansion of the city was started and around 1400 a monastery called Mariëngaarde. was built near today's Grote- or Sint Nicolaaskerk. The Grote Kerk od Sint Nicolaaskerk was built after 1400.

In 1499 and 1514 or 1515 the town suffered severe fires. After the first fire, no more than eighty houses and the church remained standing. The second fire was even more devastating: apart from the church, a nunnery and a few surrounding houses, nothing remained. Also Speeltoren, and this was later rebuilt and adapted many times, there is no building from 1355 in Monnickendam.

In 1575 the city wall was replaced by a wall with beer gates and four bastions. The Jewish cemetery was later laid out on the bastion in front of the Zuiderpoort, and a remnant of the wall still stands there. Only a circular path around most of the historic old town is evidence of the rest of the city fortifications.

A good time began for the city after 1575. Many buildings and street names still remind of this. There are numerous monumental buildings in the city center. In the city scales (De Waag) the products of the cheese dairies in the area were weighed before they were shipped. Today's shipyards and smokehouses have been permanently represented in Monnickendam since then.

Because of a water flow from the then Zuiderzee to the river Purmer Ee (this river was in direct connection with the lakes Purmer, Beemster, Schermer behind it to the city of Alkmaar), large seagoing vessels were able to call at Monnickendam.

As a result, Monnickendam maintained a lively trade with the Baltic Sea countries. The closing of the Purmer Ee with the Nieuwendam meant the end of the city's overseas trading activities. A newly dug canal (trekvaart) to Amsterdam directed trade to this city. At that time, a strongly city-oriented cattle breeding developed in Waterland.

By 1940, parts of the city were redeveloped and new buildings were only built in the city center. After 1959 the city was expanded to the south, and the municipality of Monnickendam was merged with others to form Waterland in 1991. Monnickendam is the "capital" of this municipality. The newly built town hall is here on the Pierebaan.
