To know
Geographical notes
The reserve is located along the path of the Arnon river which flows into the Dead Sea going through a narrow gorge 410 meters below sea level, which is the most interesting part of the site. The reserve extends to the mountains of Karak to the north and Madaba to the south, reaching 900 meters above sea level in some areas. Thanks to this difference in altitude of 1,300 meters, combined with a constant flow of water ensured by seven tributaries, the Wadi Mujib presents a spectacular biodiversity.
Flora and fauna
In addition to the resident birds, the reserve is strategically important as a safe stop for the huge number of migratory birds that fly annually along the Rift Valley between theAfrica and northeastern Europe.
Many carnivores inhabit the various vegetation zones of Mujib, such as the striped hyena and the Syrian wolf. One of Mujib's most important animals is the Nubian ibex, a large mountain goat that has been threatened due to overhunting.
When to go
The gorge is accessible from April to October when the temperatures allow you to enter the water. Summer temperatures range from 32 to 39 ° C, while in winter from 20 to 23 ° C.
Background
The reserve was established in 1987 and became a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2011.
